Pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy interns are a part of the largest vaccination campaign the world has ever seen! The pharmacy profession is now at the forefront of the vaccination effort and is standing at the ready or in many states have already been deployed to begin the phased distribution and administration of vaccinations. To monitor results, the CDC has added vaccinations to their COVID-19 Data Tracker. U.S. COVID-19 vaccine distribution and administration data at the state level is updated daily. Visit the site here.
The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) is a national early warning system to detect possible safety problems in vaccines used in the United States. As a reminder, healthcare professionals, including pharmacies are required to report COVID-19 vaccine administration and post vaccination, patient reported adverse events (AEs). Healthcare providers are encouraged to report to VAERS any additional clinically significant AEs following vaccination, even if they are not sure if vaccination caused the event.
A recent in vitro study has shown that the antibodies from people who have received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine can effectively neutralize SARS-CoV-2 with a key mutation that is also found in two highly transmissible strains in the U.S. and abroad. While Pfizer, BioNTech, and researchers are encouraged by these early findings, additional data is needed to monitor the vaccine’s effectiveness in preventing COVID-19 caused by the newly circulating virus variants.
